Abu al-Tufayl narrates: I said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): "Your people say that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed sa'i between Safa and Marwah, and that this is a sunnah." Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "They have spoken correctly. When Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was commanded with the rites of Hajj, Satan appeared before him at the place of sa'i and raced Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) outstripped him. Then Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) took Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) to Jamrat al-Aqabah, and Satan appeared before him there. Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) threw seven pebbles at him, and he went away. Then he appeared before him at the middle Jamrah, and he threw seven pebbles at him." The narrator says: "There he laid Sayyiduna Isma'il (peace be upon him) down (in order to sacrifice him). Sayyiduna Isma'il (peace be upon him) had a white shirt on his body. He said: 'O my dear father, I have no garment other than this in which you could shroud me, so take it off me so that you may shroud me in it.' Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) had begun to take it off when a call came from behind: 'O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled the vision.' Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) turned around, and there was a white, horned ram with beautiful eyes." (Al-Haythami says:) I say: After this the narrator mentioned the complete hadith, which has already passed in the chapter on Hajj.
Imam Ahmad recorded it; its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except Abu Asim al-Ghanawi, who is thiqah (trustworthy). Before this, a route from this Companion has passed, recorded by Imam Ahmad and al-Tabarani, in which it is mentioned that the one who was to be sacrificed was Sayyiduna Ishaq (peace be upon him). The chain of that report contains Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, who had become confused (ikhtilat) in his memory.
