Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! Give me counsel." He said: "Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him as a partner." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! Give me more." He said: "When you do something bad, then do good." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! Give me more." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Remain upright and keep your character good."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains Abdullah bin Salih, who has been declared trustworthy, while a group declared him da'if (weak); it also contains Abu al-Samit Sa'id bin Abi Suwayd, the freed slave of al-Mahri, whom I do not know.
