Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports as a marfu' hadith: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tribulations will come to you like pieces of a dark night. In them a man will be a believer in the morning and become a disbeliever by the evening, or be a believer in the evening and have become a disbeliever by the morning. One of you will sell his religion for a little of the goods of this world." The narrator says: I submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! What should I do then?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Break your hand." I submitted: "What if a splint (that is, a bandage tied over a broken bone) is bound on it?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Break the other one." I submitted: "What if a splint is bound on it?" He said: "Break your foot." I submitted: "What if a splint is bound on it?" He said: "Break the other foot as well." I submitted: "How long will this go on?" He said: "Until a sinful hand (that is, the hand of a killer) or a natural death comes to you."
Al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat.
