Zahdam al-Jarmi narrates: We were conversing at night with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). He said: I am about to tell you something that is neither secret nor public. When the affair of this man reached the point it reached (by this Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) meant Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)), I said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): Withdraw (from people); even if you were hiding in a hole, you would be searched out and pulled out of it. But he did not accept what I said. And by Allah! Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) will certainly become your ruler, because Allah Almighty has said: "Whoever is killed wrongfully, We have given his heir authority; so let him not exceed the limits in killing; he will be helped." Quraysh will certainly force you to follow the ways of the Persians and the Romans, and the Jews, the Christians and the Magians will certainly be followed. Whoever among you at that time holds on to what he recognises as good will be saved, and whoever abandons it, and you will abandon it, you will become like the nations that were destroyed.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains narrators whom I do not know.
