Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a rider came, made his mount kneel by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I have come to you from a journey of nine days. I have exhausted my body, I have stayed awake through my nights and I have remained thirsty through my days, in order to ask you about two matters which have robbed me of my nights' sleep. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: What is your name? He said: I am Zayd al-Khayl. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Rather, you are Zayd al-Khayr. He said: I want to ask you about the sign of Allah Almighty concerning what He intends, and about His sign concerning what He does not intend. I love good and the people of good, and also those who act upon it; if I act upon it, I am certain of its reward, and if anything of it escapes me, I grieve over it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is the sign of Allah Almighty concerning what He intends, and the sign of Allah Almighty concerning what He does not intend is this: had He intended the other state for you, He would have made that other state easy for you, and then you would not care in which valley you travelled."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Awn bin Umarah, who is da'if (weak).
