عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ قَالَ : لَمَّا مَاتَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ ابْنُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - مَشَى الْمُشْرِكُونَ بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَى بَعْضٍ ، فَقَالُوا : إِنَّ هَذَا الصَّابِئَ قَدْ بُتِرَ اللَّيْلَةَ . فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ - تَعَالَى - إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ إِلَى آخِرِ السُّورَةِ . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي حَدِيثٍ طَوِيلٍ فَرَّقْتُهُ فِي مَوَاضِعِهِ ، وَفِيهِ وَاصِلُ بْنُ السَّائِبِ وَهُوَ مَتْرُوكٌ .
Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When Sayyiduna Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him), the son of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), passed away, the polytheists went to one another and said: The lineage of that irreligious man has been cut off tonight. Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "Indeed, We have given you al-Kawthar", to the end of the surah.
Al-Tabarani recorded it within a long hadith, which I have split up and placed in its various places; its chain contains Wasil bin al-Sa'ib, who is matruk (abandoned).
