Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: I was sitting with Abdullah bin Ubayy when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by with some of his Companions. Abdullah bin Ubayy said: "When we return to Madinah, the mighty will drive out the lowly from it." The narrator says: I went to Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) and told him about it. He went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned it to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for Abdullah bin Ubayy, and Abdullah bin Ubayy swore before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he had not said this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked towards Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! This boy, Zayd bin Arqam, told me about it. Then Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) came, took me by the hand, went off with me and said: This one told me this. The narrator says: Abdullah bin Ubayy rebuked me. We came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and I began to weep. I said: Yes, by the One who sent down upon you the light and prophethood, this man did say it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from him, and Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "When the hypocrites come to you." This is to the end of the Surah. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
This narration is mentioned in the "Sahih" without this wording.
Al-Tabarani recorded it from his teacher Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Sa'id bin Abi Maryam, who is da'if (weak).
