It is reported from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), as Sa'id bin Jubayr thought, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in Makkah. He recited Surah al-Najm until he reached this point: "Have you considered al-Lat and al-Uzza, and Manat, the third one?" Then these words ran upon his tongue: "Those are the exalted gharaniq, whose intercession is hoped for." The narrator said: The polytheists of Makkah heard this and were pleased with it. This weighed heavily upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet but that when he recited, Satan cast (something) into his recitation; then Allah Almighty abolishes what Satan casts, and then makes His verses firm."
Al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani recorded it, and he added these words, the verse up to: "The punishment of a barren (destructive) day." This refers to the day of the battle of Badr. The narrators of both of them are the narrators of the Sahih, except that al-Tabarani said: To my knowledge
this narration is narrated only from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). A "mursal" narration longer than this has already preceded in Surah al-Hajj, but it is da'if (weak) in its chain.
