Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), regarding this statement of Allah Almighty, said: (Allah Almighty says:) "Among you some are wretched and (some) are fortunate." And regarding other surahs like this, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had an intense desire that all people would believe and pledge allegiance to him upon guidance. So Allah Almighty informed him that only the one for whom felicity had already been decreed by Allah Almighty in the "Remembrance" would believe, and only the one for whom wretchedness had already been decreed by Allah Almighty in the "Remembrance" would go astray. Then Allah Almighty said to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Perhaps you will destroy yourself because they do not become believers." "If We willed, We could send down upon them a sign from the sky, and their necks would remain bowed before it."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy, except that, according to one view, Ali bin Abi Talhah did not hear from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both).
