Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 11205

Sa'id bin Jubayr said: (Allah Almighty says:) "Why, when you heard it", that is, heard the false accusation, did you not say: "It is not right for us", that is, you should have said: it is not fitting for us "that we speak of this", that is, speak of the accusation of zina, when our eyes have seen nothing: "Glory be to You, this is a great slander." This means: why did you not say as Sa'd bin Mu'adh al-Ansari said? What happened was that when Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) heard what someone had said about Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), he said: Glory be to You, indeed this is a great slander. (The narrator said:) Slander (buhtan) is when a person fabricates a lie and says something that never happened.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Ibn Lahi'ah, in whom there is weakness.
