Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 11154

Abu Salih narrated: Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Ghanm (may Allah be pleased with him) was in the mosque of Damascus among a group of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), among whom was Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Ghanm (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O people! What I fear most for you is hidden shirk (polytheism)." Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Allah, we ask You for forgiveness." Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Ghanm (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Have you not heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever fasts to show off has committed shirk; whoever gives charity to show off has committed shirk; and whoever prays to show off has committed shirk'?" Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Yes, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also recited this verse: 'So whoever hopes to meet his Lord.'" This verse weighed heavily on the people and they became distressed. He said: "Shall I not try to remove your distress?" The people said: "Yes, and may Allah Almighty also remove worry and harm from you." He said: "It is like the verse in Surah al-Rum: 'And whatever you give as usury (riba) so that it may increase within the wealth of people does not increase with Allah Almighty.' So whoever does a deed to show off, it will not be recorded either for him or against him."
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Muhammad bin al-Sa'ib al-Kalbi, who is a kadhdhab (liar).
