Mutarrif narrates: We asked Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Abu Abdullah, what happened with you that you abandoned the Caliph until he was martyred, and then you have come seeking retribution for his blood?" Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "We recited this in the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), in the time of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), in the time of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and in the time of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him): 'And beware of a trial that will not strike only those among you who have done wrong.'" (Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) "We did not think that we would be the ones concerned with it, until it befell us the way it did."
Imam Ahmad recorded it with two chains, the narrators of one of which are the narrators of the Sahih.
