Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said about this saying of Allah Almighty: Allah Almighty says: "Do not say 'Ra'ina'." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: People used to say to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Give us the chance to make you hear us." At that time the word "ra'ina" was just like saying "'atina". "Hear, may you not be made to hear" — that is, they used to say this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: They (that is, the Jews) used to say: "May you not hear," and they used to say this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "May you not hear." So Allah Almighty revealed this verse about it: "And if they had said: 'We hear and we obey,' and 'Hear, and look upon us,' it would have been better for them."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Bishr bin al-Harith, who is da'if (weak).
