Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the trench to be dug, and a trench was dug around Madinah. The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! We have come up against a rock which we are unable to dig (i.e. break)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) got up, and we got up with him. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, he took hold of the pickaxe, struck a blow with it and said the takbir, and I heard a sound the like of which I had never heard. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Persia has been conquered." Then he said the takbir and struck another blow, and I heard a sound the like of which I had never heard. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rome has been conquered." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir and struck another blow, and I heard a sound the like of which I had never heard. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(The people of the tribe of) Himyar have come as helpers and supporters."
Al-Tabarani recorded it with two chains; one of them contains Huyayy bin Abdullah, whom Ibn Ma'in declared thiqah (trustworthy) while a group declared him da'if (weak); the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
