Sunan Ibn Majah 1133 — What was narrated concerning sitting in circles
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَاتِمُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيل . ح وحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رُمْحٍ ، أَنْبَأَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ جَمِيعًا ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلَانَ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " نَهَى أَنْ يُحَلَّقَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ قَبْلَ الصَّلَاةِ ".
It was narrated from ‘Amr bin Shu’aib, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade sitting in circles in the mosque on Fridays before the prayer.
Brief Explanation
1؎ : Because on the day of Jumu‘ah it is obligatory to listen to the sermon and to remain silent, and if people sit in a circle, they will inevitably engage in conversation; therefore, sitting in a circle has been prohibited.

Benefit:
Coming early for the Friday prayer is a cause of reward.
However, after arriving early, one should engage in remembrance (dhikr), recitation (tilawah), and similar acts.
Forming separate groups and engaging in idle talk here and there is contrary to this purpose, against the etiquette of the mosque, and a cause of disturbance for those performing prayer.
