Al-Muntaqa Ibn al-Jarud 829 — Punishment for drinking
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ الْمُخَرِّمِيُّ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ ، قَالَ : ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " أُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِرَجُلٍ قَدْ شَرِبَ الْخَمْرَ ، قَالَ : فَضَرَبَهُ بِجَرِيدَتَيْنِ مَعَهُ نَحْوًا مِنْ أَرْبَعِينَ " ثُمَّ صَنَعَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ مثل ذَلِكَ ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ اسْتَشَارَ النَّاسَ ، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ : أَخَفُّ الْحُدُودِ ثَمَانِينَ .
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man who had drunk alcohol was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he struck him with two sticks about forty lashes. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the same punishment. When the era of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came, he consulted the companions. Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The lightest punishment is (eighty) lashes.
