920 صحيح حديث أُمِّ حَبِيبَةَ قَالَتْ: قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَلْ لَكَ فِي بِنْتِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ قَالَ: فَأَفْعَلُ مَاذَا قُلْتُ: تَنْكِحُ؛ قَالَ: أَتُحِبِّينَ قُلْتُ: لَسْتُ لَكَ بِمُخْلِيَةٍ، وَأَحَبُّ مَنْ شَرَكَنِي فِيكَ أُخْتِي قَالَ: إِنَّهَا لاَ تَحِلُّ لِي قُلْتُ: بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ تَخْطُبُ قَالَ: ابْنَةَ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ قَالَ: لَوْ لَمْ تَكُنْ رَبِيبَتِي مَا حَلَّتْ لِي، أَرْضَعَتْنِي وَأَبَاهَا ثُوَيْبَةُ، فَلاَ تَعْرِضْنَ عَلَيَّ بَنَاتِكُنَّ وَلاَ أَخَوَاتِكُنَّ
Sayyida Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that I said, "O Messenger of Allah, do you wish to marry the daughter of Abu Sufyan (Ghurrah or Durrah or Hamnah)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Then what would I do with her?" I said, "You may marry her." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Would you like that?" I said, "I am not alone (rather, I already have co-wives), and I would like for my sister to also share with me in your relationship." Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "She is not lawful for me (because two sisters cannot be married to one man at the same time)." I said, "I have heard that you have sent a marriage proposal to (Zaynab bint Abi Salamah)." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "To the daughter of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her)?" I said, "Yes." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Wow, wow! Even if she were not my stepdaughter (the daughter of my wife from her previous husband), she would still not be lawful for me. Both I and her father, Abu Salamah, were breastfed by Thuwaibah. Look, do not offer your daughters and sisters to me for marriage in the future."
Brief Explanation
Hadith Narrator: Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyidah Umm Habibah radi Allahu anha’s real name was Ramla bint Abi Sufyan. Among the Mothers of the Believers, Umm Habibah was the closest to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in lineage. She accepted Islam at the beginning of the prophetic mission. She migrated to Abyssinia. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam sent a proposal for her marriage to the Negus (Najashi). Through the agency of Khalid bin Sa’id bin ‘As, her marriage to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was solemnized, and her dowry (mahr) was four hundred dinars. The number of her narrations is 65, of which two ahadith are agreed upon (muttafaqun alayh). She passed away in 42 AH.
