Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded the giving of Zakat al-Fitr as one sa’ of dates or one sa’ of barley. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that later people made it two mudd (half a sa’) of wheat, equal to that.

Brief Explanation
In the narration of Sahih Muslim, it is stated as follows: I will give the zakat of Sayyiduna Abbas radi Allahu anhu, in fact, I will give double its amount. Sayyiduna Abbas radi Allahu anhu had already given two years’ zakat in advance to the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Therefore, he did not give zakat to those collectors. Some have said that the meaning is that, for the time being, grant them respite. Next year, collect double, that is, two years’ zakat from them. (Summarized from Wahidi)
