Hadith 394

Hazrat Asim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that I asked Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) about the Du'a Qunoot, so he replied that it should be before bowing (ruku‘). I said that such-and-such person (Muhammad bin Sirin) says that you said it is after bowing. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said to this, "He has said incorrectly." Then Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this hadith to us: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the Du'a Qunoot after bowing for a month, and in it, he supplicated against the tribes of Banu Sulaym. He narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had sent a group of forty or seventy Qur'an-reciting Companions (the narrator was unsure) to the polytheists, but these people of Banu Sulaym (whose chief was 'Amir bin Tufayl) confronted them and killed them, even though they had a treaty with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (but they betrayed it). I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) so grieved and saddened over any matter as he was over the martyrdom of these Companions.

Brief Explanation
That is, he was not as distressed over anyone as he was over the Qurra (reciters), because they used to recite the Qur'an more and with greater frequency than others. Their number was seventy. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had sent them to the people of Najd to invite them to Islam. When they reached the place of Bi’r Ma‘unah, ‘Amir bin Tufayl attacked them with an army and martyred them. The tribes of Banu Sulaym—Ra‘l and Dhakwan—had committed this act of treachery.
