1708 صحيح حديث أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخدْرِيِّ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: لَتَتْبَعُنَّ سَنَنَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ، شِبْرًا بِشِبْرٍ، وَذِرَاعًا بِذِرَاعٍ حَتَّى لَوْ دَخَلُوا جُحْرَ ضَبٍّ تَبِعْتُمُوهُمْ قُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ الْيَهُودَ وَالنَّصَارَى قَالَ: فَمَنْ
Hazrat Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: You will surely follow the ways of those who came before you, inch by inch and cubit by cubit, so much so that if they entered the hole of a lizard, you would follow them into it as well. We asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Do you mean the Jews and the Christians?" He said, "Who else?"
Brief Explanation
The meaning of entering a lizard’s hole is that you will adopt their very ways and manners. In our era, this is exactly the case. The power of ijtihad (independent juristic reasoning) and creative thinking has vanished from among the Muslims. Whatever they see the English doing, they themselves begin to do the same. They do not even consider whether this action is suitable and reasonable in view of our country and our climate or not. (Raaz)
