Hadith 169

Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) wished to have intercourse with any of his wives and she was menstruating, she would first tie a waist-wrapper at his command.

Brief Explanation
In these ahadith, what is meant by lying or sitting with a woman during her menstrual period is intimacy without intercourse. The deniers of hadith, by interpreting these ahadith as referring to intercourse and thus claiming that they contradict the Qur'an, are speaking nothing but lies and slander. (Raaz)

Narrator of the hadith: Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Maymunah bint al-Harith was married to Abdullah bin Mas'ud Thaqafi, and then he divorced her. Afterwards, Abu Ruhm married her. When he passed away, the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam married her in Dhu al-Qa'dah, 7 AH, after performing the 'Umrah of Qada. The marriage was consummated at Sarif, a place ten miles from Makkah. She is the narrator of a total of 13 ahadith, of which 7 are agreed upon (muttafaqun 'alayh). She passed away in 61 AH in Makkah, and by the order of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas radi Allahu anhuma, her bier was carried to Sarif.
