Al-Fath ar-Rabbani 9198 — on encouragement to be gentle with animals
عَنْ سَوَادَةَ بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَسَأَلْتُهُ فَأَمَرَ لَهُ بِذَوْدٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِذَا رَجَعْتَ إِلَى بَيْتِكَ فَمُرْهُمْ فَلْيُحْسِنُوا غَذَاءَ رِبَاعِهِمْ وَمُرْهُمْ فَلْيُقَلِّمُوا أَظْفَارَهُمْ وَلَا يَعْبِطُوا بِهَا ضُرُوعَ مَوَاشِيهِمْ إِذَا حَلَبُوا
Sayyiduna Sawadah bin Rabi’ (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him (for something). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered some she-camels for me and said to me: When you reach your home, tell them to give good food to the young ones born in the spring, and also tell them to trim their nails so that they do not cause the udders of the cattle to bleed while milking.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … When milking, a gentle manner should be adopted, and the nails should be trimmed at the time of milking, so that the animal does not experience any discomfort.
