عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَنَّهُ رَأَى مُعَاوِيَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَخْطُبُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ وَفِي يَدِهِ قُصَّةٌ مِنْ شَعَرٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذَا وَقَالَ إِنَّمَا عُذِّبَ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَتْ هَذِهِ نِسَاؤُهُمْ
It is narrated from Humaid bin Abdur Rahman, he says: I saw Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) delivering a sermon on the pulpit, while he had a tuft of hair in his hand. He said: O people of Madinah! Where are your scholars? I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbidding this. Also, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The Children of Israel were punished when their women began to use such tufts of hair.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This pertains to the era of the caliphate of Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah radi Allahu anhu and his last Hajj; on this occasion, he was also present in Madinah Munawwarah. During a sermon, it is permissible to hold something in the hand to show to the people. Furthermore, incidents of destruction and ruin of Banu Isra'il or other nations may be mentioned as a lesson, so that people may know how dangerous and destructive the consequences of disobeying Allah Ta'ala and His Messenger can be.
