Al-Fath ar-Rabbani 7885 — on the Prohibition of Playing with Animals

(Second chain) Hisham bin Zaid says: I entered the governor's house with my grandfather, Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), and saw that a live chicken was tied up and being used for target practice. Whenever it was struck by an arrow, it would cry out. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade using a living animal, tied up, for target practice.
