Al-Fath ar-Rabbani 4947 — on the Arrangement of Military Expeditions
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَيْرُ الصَّحَابَةِ أَرْبَعَةٌ وَخَيْرُ السَّرَايَا أَرْبَعُ مِائَةٍ وَخَيْرُ الْجُيُوشِ أَرْبَعَةُ آلَافٍ وَلَا يُغْلَبُ اثْنَا عَشَرَ أَلْفًا مِنْ قِلَّةٍ
Narrated by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The best companion is four, the best detachment is of four hundred individuals, the best army is of four thousand, and an army of twelve thousand will not be defeated merely due to small numbers.

Benefits: … The purpose of this hadith is that, O companions, the minimum number of small and large armies should be at least this much; if it is more, then it will be even better.
