بابٌ فِي صِفَاتِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَتَنْزِيهِهِ عَنْ كُلِّ نَقْصٍ
Chapter on His attributes, Mighty and Majestic, and His being free from all deficiency
Al-Fath ar-Rabbani 19 — on His attributes, Mighty and Majestic
عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ الْمُشْرِكِينَ قَالُوا لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ! انْسُبْ لَنَا رَبَّكَ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى: {قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ، اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ، لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ، وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ}
Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when the polytheists said to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "O Muhammad! Tell us the lineage of your Lord," Allah Almighty revealed this Surah: «قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ٭اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ ٭لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ ٭وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ» [الإخلاص: 1-4] "Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Self-Sufficient. He neither begets nor is born. And there is none comparable to Him." The full meaning of al-Samad is: «الْمَصْمُودُ إِلَيْهِ فِي الْحَوَائِجِ، الْغَنِيُّ عَنْ كُلِّ أَحَدٍ.» (He is the One to whom people turn for their needs, while He is free of need from everyone and independent).
