Al-Adab al-Mufrad 959 — Striking brother's thigh without ill intent
حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرٌ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ: كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا كَانَ جُنُبًا، يَصُبُّ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثَلاَثَ حَفَنَاتٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ قَالَ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ: أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ، إِنَّ شَعْرِي أَكْثَرُ مِنْ ذَاكَ، قَالَ: وَضَرَبَ بِيَدِهِ عَلَى فَخِذِ الْحَسَنِ فَقَالَ: يَا ابْنَ أَخِي، كَانَ شَعْرُ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ شَعْرِكَ وَأَطْيَبَ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah), he would pour three handfuls of water over his head. Hasan bin Muhammad ibn Hanafiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Abu Abdullah! My hair is much more than that (for three handfuls to suffice). The narrator says that Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) struck his hand on Hasan’s thigh and said: My nephew! The Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) hair was more and purer than yours.

Benefits and Issues:
The translation of the chapter heading is clear: that Sayyiduna Jabir radi Allahu anhu struck the thigh of Hasan rahimahullah, and this was by way of admonition. It is also clarified that a person should not fall prey to baseless misgivings. When the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, who was the purest of all humans, sufficed with this, then what issue can there be for anyone else?
