بَابُ لا يَبْدَأُ أَهْلَ الذِّمَّةِ بِالسَّلامِ

Al-Adab al-Mufrad 1102 — Do not initiate Salam to non-Muslims
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ، عَنْ مَرْثَدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي بَصْرَةَ الْغِفَارِيِّ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ”إِنِّي رَاكِبٌ غَدًا إِلَى يَهُودَ، فَلاَ تَبْدَأُوهُمْ بِالسَّلاَمِ، فَإِذَا سَلَّمُوا عَلَيْكُمْ فَقُولُوا: وَعَلَيْكُمْ.“
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ سَلامٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ وَاضِحٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، مِثْلَهُ، وَزَادَ: سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ سَلامٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ وَاضِحٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، مِثْلَهُ، وَزَادَ: سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Basrah Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Tomorrow morning I am going towards the Jews, so do not initiate greeting them with salam, and if they greet you with salam, then reply with «وعلیکم»."
In another narration from Sayyiduna Abu Basrah Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) in a similar manner, but in it he says: I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
