باب مَا يَقُولُ الرَّجُلُ إِذَا رَأَى الْهِلاَلَ
Chapter: What a man should say when he sees the new crescent.
Sunan Abu Dawud — Hadith 5092

حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيل ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبَانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ ، أَنَّهُ بَلَغَهُ " أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا رَأَى الْهِلَالَ ، قَالَ : " هِلَالُ خَيْرٍ ، وَرُشْدٍ هِلَالُ خَيْرٍ ، وَرُشْدٍ هِلَالُ خَيْرٍ ، وَرُشْدٍ آمَنْتُ بِالَّذِي خَلَقَكَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ ، ثُمَّ يَقُولُ : الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي ذَهَبَ بِشَهْرِ كَذَا ، وَجَاءَ بِشَهْرِ كَذَا " .
Narrated Qatadah: When the Prophet of Allah ﷺ saw the new moon, he said: "a new moon of good and right guidance; a new moon of good and right guidance; a new moon of good and right guidance. I believe in Him Who created you" three times. He would then say: "Praise be to Allah Who has made such and such a month to pass and has brought such and such a month. "

Benefits and Issues:
The aforementioned supplication is, by consensus of the verifying scholars, weak. However, there is another supplication found in Musnad Ahmad and Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi regarding which the verifying scholars have written:
Hasan li-shawahidihi, meaning this supplication is of the Hasan (good) grade due to supporting narrations.
And that supplication is as follows:
Allahu Akbar. Allahumma ahillahu ‘alayna bil-amni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-islam, rabbuna wa rabbuka Allah.
(Musnad Ahmad 1/162 and Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, Kitab al-Da‘awat, Hadith 3451)
Whereas another supplication is also found in Sunan al-Darimi,
the wording of which is:
Allahu Akbar. Allahumma ahillahu ‘alayna bil-amni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-islam, wat-tawfiqi lima tuhibbu wa tarda, rabbuna wa rabbuka Allah. (Sunan al-Darimi, Kitab al-Sawm, Chapter: What is said upon sighting the new moon, Hadith 1693)
Therefore, upon sighting the new moon, either of these two supplications may be recited.
