Question:
Do the scholars of Ahl al-Hadith in the Indian subcontinent consider Ghusl on Friday as obligatory?
Answer:
Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿammā baʿd:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ clearly said:
غُسْلُ یَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ وَاجِبٌ عَلٰی كُلِّ مُحْتَلِمٍ
“Ghusl on the day of Jumu‘ah is obligatory upon every adult male.”
(Bukhari – Kitab al-Jumu‘ah, Muslim – Kitab al-Jumu‘ah)
Ruling:
This hadith explicitly states that Ghusl on Friday is obligatory for every adult male.
- The majority of Ahl al-Hadith scholars hold the opinion that Ghusl for Jumu‘ah is wājib, based on this hadith and other authentic narrations.
- If some individual scholars do not consider it obligatory, that is based on their personal ijtihad, and the responsibility of that opinion lies with them.
Conclusion:
Based on authentic narrations, performing Ghusl on the day of Jumu‘ah is wājib, as stated by the Prophet ﷺ. The general position of Ahl al-Hadith aligns with this ruling, with minor exceptions due to personal scholarly interpretation.
