Explanation of the Meaning of the Grave
Allah Almighty said:
“Then Allah sent a crow who scratched the ground to show him how to hide the body of his brother.”
”
, Allah Almighty says:
(فَأَقْبَرَهُ) The Arabs say ‘اقبرْتُ الرَّجُلَ‘ meaning I buried a man. When someone says I made a grave for him and put him in the grave, it means I buried him.”
And Allah Almighty said:
“There is a barrier behind them until the Day they are resurrected.”
Explanation:
After death, whether buried in soil, drowned in water, eaten by beasts, or burned to ashes, wherever the body or particles or a particle of the deceased remain, that place is called his grave.

Not like that, but in the manner modesty is due, which is that you protect your head and what is in it (i.e., eyes, ears, tongue, etc.), then protect your stomach (so that nothing unlawful enters it), and protect what is connected to the stomach (i.e., private parts, hands, feet, etc.), and remember (in the grave) the decay of the bones. We also dislike death. The Prophet (PBUH) said:
Meeting Allah does not mean death; rather, when death comes to a believer, he is given the glad tidings of Allah’s pleasure and honor. At that time, nothing is more beloved to the believer than the blessings he will receive thereafter, and he (hastens) to meet Allah, and Allah also loves to meet him. When death comes to a disbeliever, he is given the glad tidings of Allah’s punishment and torment. Then nothing is more hated by him than the coming events, so he dislikes meeting Allah, and Allah also does not love to meet him.

Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) says that when the soul of a believer departs, two angels take it towards the heavens (the narrator of the hadith) Hammad says that Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) mentioned the fragrance of the soul and musk and said that the angels of the heavens (upon smelling this soul) say: This is a pure soul that has come from the earth, may Allah have mercy on you and on the body you inhabited. Then the angels take this soul to their Lord, and Allah Almighty commands:
Take it to its appointed place (i.e., Al-A’la) until the Day of Resurrection. The narrator of the hadith mentioned the departure of the disbeliever’s soul and said that Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) mentioned the foul smell of the soul and the curse upon it by the angels. The angels of the heavens say: This is an impure soul coming from the earth. Then (by Allah’s command) it is ordered to be taken to its appointed place (i.e., Sijjin) until the Day of Resurrection. Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) says that when the Prophet (PBUH) mentioned the foul smell of the disbeliever’s soul, he covered his nose with the edge of his cloak in disgust (and then showed how he covered his nose with his cloak).

Narrated from Hazrat Bara bin Azib (RA) that we went out with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) for the funeral of an Ansari (Companion). When we reached the cemetery, the grave was not yet prepared. So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sat down, and we also sat around him so quietly as if birds were sitting on our heads. He (ﷺ) had a stick in his hand with which he was scratching the ground. He raised his blessed head and said:
“Seek refuge from the punishment of the grave.” He (ﷺ) repeated this two or three times. Then he said:
“When a disbeliever is about to depart from this world and move towards the Hereafter, black-faced angels descend upon him. They have shrouds made of coarse cloth, and they sit at a distance within sight. Then the Angel of Death (Hazrat Azrael) comes and sits near his head and says, ‘O evil soul, come out (and depart) towards the wrath and anger of Allah.’ The soul enters the body and the angels pull it out as if a thorny iron skewer is pulled out of wet wool. When the angel extracts his soul, the other angels do not leave it in the hands of the Angel of Death even for a moment but wrap it in the coarse shroud. The soul emits a stench worse than the worst smell arising from a dead body on the earth. The angels carry it upwards (towards the sky). Wherever they pass by the angels near Allah, they ask, ‘Whose foul soul is this?’ The angels reply, ‘It is the soul of so-and-so, the worst name that was taken in the world.’ They continue to mention the worst name until the angels bring it to the sky of the world. The angels request to open the gate of the sky, but it is not opened. Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) recited this verse: ‘The gates of heaven will not be opened for the disbelievers, nor will they enter Paradise until a camel passes through the eye of a needle.’
Then a command comes from Allah to record him in Sijjin (the prison) located in the lowest earth, and the disbeliever’s soul is severely thrown on the earth. After that, the Messenger (ﷺ) recited this verse from the Qur’an:
“Whoever associates partners with Allah, it is as though he has fallen from the sky, and the birds snatch him or the wind blows him to a distant place.”

Narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
When a deceased is buried in the grave, they hear the sound of the shoes of those returning. If the deceased is a believer, it is said to him (in the grave):
Sit down. He sits down and is shown the setting sun and is asked about the person who was sent to you long ago and what you used to say about him and what testimony you bear about him? The believer says:
Just let me sit and perform the Asr prayer (the sun is about to set). The angels say:
Indeed, you used to pray in the world, now answer the question we are asking, tell us what you used to say about the person who was sent among you long ago and what testimony you bore about him? The believer says:
He is Muhammad (ﷺ), I testify that he is the Messenger of Allah and that he came with the truth from Allah. Then it is said to him: You lived on this belief, died on it, and, God willing, you will rise on it. Then one of the gates of Paradise is opened for him and he is told:
This is your palace in Paradise and whatever Allah has prepared for you in Paradise (look at all this), his desire and pleasure increase. Then his grave is expanded seventy cubits (i.e., 105 feet or 35 meters) and illuminated. His body is returned to its previous state (i.e., he is laid down) and his soul is purified and fragranced and it flies in the form of a bird among the trees of Paradise. (The good end of the believer in the grave) is the interpretation of Allah’s statement:
Allah grants the people of faith steadfastness in the life of this world and the hereafter (i.e., the grave) by the blessing of the pure word (Kalima Tayyiba).

Muhaddith Al-Bani has declared it “Sahih”.
Narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
When a deceased is buried in the grave, a righteous person sits up in the grave without any fear or anxiety. He is asked:
On which religion were you? The righteous (believer) person says:
I was on Islam. Then he is asked:
Who was the person (who was sent among you)? The believer says:
Hazrat Muhammad (ﷺ) was the Messenger of Allah who came to us with miracles from Allah, and we confirmed him. Then he is asked:
Have you seen Allah? He says:
It is not possible for anyone to see Allah (in this world). Then a hole towards the fire is opened for him, and he sees how one part of the fire is consuming the other. He is told to look, this is the fire from which Allah has saved you. Then a door towards Paradise is opened, and the believer sees the gardens of Paradise and the blessings therein. He is told this is your abode; you lived your life on faith, died in that state of faith, and, God willing, you will be raised in that state of faith. When a sinful person is seated in the grave, he is very anxious and fearful. He is asked: On which religion were you? He says:
I do not know. Then he is asked:
Who was the person (who was sent among you)? He says:
I used to say what I heard others say. A door towards Paradise is opened, and he sees the gardens and other blessings of Paradise, but he is told this is the Paradise from which Allah has deprived you. Then a door towards Hell is opened for him, and he sees how one part of the fire is consuming the other. He is told:
This is your abode; you remained in doubt about Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), died in that state of doubt, and surely you will be raised in that doubt.

Narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (RA) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to the garden of Bani Najjar. There, he heard a sound which frightened him, and he inquired:
Whose graves are these? The Companions (RA) replied:
These are the graves of those who died in the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah). The Prophet ﷺ said:
Seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the Fire and the trial of the Dajjal. The Companions (RA) asked:
O Messenger of Allah! For whom is that? He ﷺ replied:
When a buried deceased is a disbeliever (hypocrite), an angel comes to him and severely rebukes him, asking: Whom did you worship? The disbeliever (or hypocrite) says:
I do not know. The angel replies:
You neither used your intellect nor did you recite (the Quran). Then the angel asks:
What did you say about this man (i.e., Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)? The disbeliever (or hypocrite) says:
I used to say what others said. (Upon hearing this answer) the angel begins to strike him between his ears (i.e., on the brain) with iron hammers, and he screams loudly. His voice is heard by every living creature except jinn and humans.

Hazrat Bara bin Azib (RA) says:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
When the soul of a disbeliever is returned to his body in the grave, two angels come to him, lift him up and make him sit, and ask:
Who is your Lord? The disbeliever says:
Alas, I do not know. The angels ask:
What is your religion? The disbeliever says:
Alas, I do not know. The angels ask:
Who was the person sent among you? The disbeliever says:
Alas, I do not know. Then a voice from the sky calls out: He has lied, so prepare a bed of fire for him, clothe him with the garment of fire, and open a door to Hell for him. Thus, the hot and poisonous wind of Hell begins to come to him. His grave is constricted upon him until his ribs on one side are joined with the ribs on the other side. Then a foul, filthy-clothed, very bad-smelling person comes to him and says:
Be glad of the bad end; this is the day that was promised to you. The disbeliever says: Who are you? Your face is very ugly, and you have brought evil for me. He replies:
I am your deeds. Then the disbeliever says: O my Lord! Do not establish the Day of Judgment. One narration says that a hideous, filthy-clothed, foul-smelling person comes to him and says:
Be glad of disgrace and everlasting punishment. The disbeliever says: May Allah protect you from evil, who are you? He says: I am your filthy deeds. (In the world) you used to procrastinate in obeying Allah and were always ready to disobey Him; may Allah give you the worst punishment. Then a blind and deaf angel is appointed over him, holding an iron mace in his hand, which if struck on a mountain would shatter it into pieces. The angel beats him severely. The disbeliever is shattered into pieces with one blow. Allah then restores him to his previous state (i.e., his body is made whole again). Then the angel beats him a second time, and the disbeliever screams so loudly that every living creature, jinn and human, hears it. Hazrat Bara bin Azib (RA) says: Then a door to the fire is opened for him, and a bed of fire is spread for him.

Muhaddith Albani has classified it as “Hasan” (good).
“Hazrat Hani, the freed slave of Hazrat Uthman (RA), says that when Hazrat Uthman (RA) would stand by a grave, he would weep so much that his blessed beard would become wet. It was said to him:
You mention Paradise and Hell but do not weep, yet you weep so much when mentioning the grave? Hazrat Uthman (RA) said that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said that the grave is the first stage of the Hereafter; if a person is saved from it, then the subsequent stages will be easy for him, but if he is not saved from it, then the later stages will be much more difficult. Also, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say:
I have not seen any place more frightening and severe than the grave.”
Hazrat Asma bint Abi Bakr (RA) says: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up to deliver a sermon and mentioned the trial of the grave in which a person will be afflicted. When he ﷺ was mentioning this, the Muslims began to scream and shout in fear.
Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) began to cry during his final illness. When asked why he was crying, he said:
I am not crying because of your leaving this world, but I am crying because of the long journey and scarcity of provisions ahead. I have camped at such a height beyond which is either Paradise or Hell, and I do not know which of the two will be my place.
Description of the pressing of the believer’s body in the grave
Narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:
Saad bin Muadh (RA) is the person upon whose death the Throne of Allah shook, for whom all the gates of the heavens were opened, in whose funeral seventy thousand angels participated; even he was pressed once by the grave, then it will become spacious.
Statement on the Belief in Tawheed and the Questioning by Munkar and Nakir
Allah Almighty said:
Allah keeps the believers firm on the truth, that is the pure word, in the life of this world, and leads the wrongdoers astray, and Allah does whatever He wills.
Narrated from Hazrat Bara bin Azib (RA) that the Prophet (PBUH) said:
When a believer is placed in his grave, angels come to him and the believer testifies “لا الہ الا اللہ و ان محمد رسول اللہ” The command of Allah (يُثَيْتُ اللهُ الَّذِينَ …) means that Allah keeps the people of faith firm in this world and the Hereafter (that is, in the grave) by the blessing of the pure word.
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (RA) that (upon hearing about the punishment of the grave) people asked:
O Messenger of Allah! The angel will stand over the head of a person struck by him, and he will become like a clay idol out of fear and terror (losing consciousness). How will he respond? You ﷺ said:
Allah keeps the believers steadfast in this world and the Hereafter (i.e., in the grave) by the blessing of the pure word (Kalima Tayyiba).
Hazrat Aisha (RA) says: I asked:
O Messenger of Allah! People will be tested in their graves, so what will be my condition? I am a weak woman. You ﷺ said:
Allah keeps the believers steadfast in this worldly life and in the grave by the blessing of the word of monotheism (Kalima Tawheed).

Statement that good deeds are a shield from the punishment of the grave
Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
When a person is buried in the grave, an angel comes from the head side to punish him, but the recitation of the Quran drives him away. When the angel comes from the front, charity and alms drive him away. And when the angel comes from the feet side, going towards the mosque drives him away.

Therefore, send abundant blessings upon me on this day, your blessings are presented before me. The Companions (RA) asked:
O Messenger of Allah! Your bones must have decayed or, in other words, your blessed body must have turned to dust, so how will our blessings be presented before you? The Prophet (ﷺ) replied:
They say your blessed body has turned to dust, whereas Allah has forbidden the bodies of the Prophets to be on the earth.
