If he attains happiness and he thanks Allah, then he receives reward, and if he suffers loss, pain, or distress and he is patient over it, then he also receives reward.”

The Importance of Showing Gratitude to the Benefactor:

Hadith 2:

I said, which poems do you want to ask about? There are many poems. He said: Those related to gratitude. So I said, may my parents be sacrificed for you, they are these. The poet says:
① Return your weak one in such a way that his weakness never troubles you any day, then his good end will increase. That weak one will reward you and repay you, praise you, and praising him for your work is also like giving a reward. When you treat a good person well, his rope of dependence will not be weak either.
Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Aisha, on the Day of Resurrection when Allah gathers the creatures, He will ask among His servants about a servant who has done good to someone: Have you thanked your benefactor? He will say: O my Lord! I thought this was from You, so I thanked You. Allah will say: You have not thanked Me while you have not thanked the person through whom I bestowed My favor upon you.”

“And it is narrated from Abu Malik, Harith bin Asim Al-Ash’ari, may Allah have mercy on him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: Purity is half of faith (meaning its reward is equivalent to half of faith) and saying الحمد لله fills the scale (meaning it is a very weighty deed whose reward will make the scale of deeds heavy) and saying سبحان الله and الحمد لله fills the space between the heavens and the earth, and prayer is light (which guides one to the truth in this world and will also be a light for the believer when crossing the bridge over Hellfire in the Hereafter) and charity is proof (that the one who gives it is a believer) patience is light, the Qur’an is a proof for you (if acted upon, otherwise) it is a proof against you. Every morning, everyone goes out to their work and they trade with their soul, so there is one who frees it (from punishment) and one who destroys it (by depriving it of Allah’s mercy).”

The Ability to Be Patient:

When he had spent everything he had, he said to them: Whatever comes to me, I do not keep it saved from you, and whoever tries to avoid asking, Allah suffices him, whoever adopts self-sufficiency, Allah makes him independent of people, and whoever holds on to patience, Allah grants him the ability to be patient, and no person has been given a gift better and more expansive than patience.”

The Patience of Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) at the Time of the Passing of the Prophet (peace be upon him):

Hadith 13:

When he passed away, Hazrat Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said, ‘Alas, dear father, the Lord has called him, and he responded to the call of the Lord. Alas, dear father! Paradise Al-Firdaws is his abode. Alas, dear father! We will inform Gabriel of your death.’ When he was buried, the daughter asked (the companions, may Allah be pleased with them), ‘Did your souls tolerate placing soil on the pure body of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)?’

Explanation of Patience and Hope for Reward from Allah:

Hadith 14:

“And Hazrat Abu Zaid, Usama bin Zaid bin Haritha, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the beloved and the son of the beloved, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates that the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ sent a message to him that her son’s last moment (death) was near, and asked him to come. He sent a message back saying that he sends his greetings and says that whatever Allah has taken, is His, and whatever He gives, is also His; to Him belongs every appointed time. Therefore, they should be patient and hope for reward from Allah. The daughter then sent another message, swearing that he must come. So the Prophet ﷺ went there with Saad bin Ubadah, Muadh bin Jabal, Ubayy bin Ka’b, Zaid bin Thabit, may Allah be pleased with them, and some other men. The child was presented to him, and he took him into his lap while his soul was restless and disturbed. (Seeing this state) tears flowed from his eyes. Upon this, Hazrat Saad, may Allah be pleased with him, said, O Messenger of Allah! What is this? He replied: This is the feeling of compassion that Allah has placed in the hearts of His servants. And in another narration: Among the servants whose hearts He wills, and Allah shows mercy upon those servants who are merciful (compassionate and kind).”

Advising the Parents of a Deceased Child to be Patient:

Hadith 15:

“And it is narrated from Hazrat Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Among the people before you, there was a king whose advisor was a magician. When the magician grew old, he said to the king, ‘I have become old; entrust a boy to me so that I may teach him this knowledge of magic.’ So the king began sending a boy to him whom he taught magic. On the way, there was also a priest’s place. Whenever the boy went to the magician, he would also sit for a while with the priest, as he liked his talks. So whenever he went to the magician, he would stop by the priest on the way. When he came to the magician (late), the magician would beat him. He told the priest about this. The priest said to him, ‘When you fear being beaten by the magician, say that your family stopped you, and when you fear your family, say that the magician stopped you.’

Thus, days passed until one day the boy saw a very large beast blocking the people’s path. The boy thought, ‘Today it will be known whether the magician or the priest is superior.’ He picked up a stone and said, ‘O Allah! If the matter of the priest is more beloved to You than that of the magician, then kill this beast with this stone so that the path may open and people may pass.’ After making this prayer, he threw the stone at the beast, which died, and the people passed. The boy went to the priest and told him this incident. The priest said, ‘Son! Today you are superior to me. I see how far your knowledge and piety have reached, and soon you will be tested. So when this trial comes, do not reveal my secret and do not tell people about me.’ This boy was born blind and leprous but (by Allah’s command) he cured himself and treated all other diseases.

One of the king’s courtiers became blind. When he heard this, he came to the boy with many gifts and said, ‘If you cure me, all these gifts that I have brought with me are yours.’ The boy said, ‘I do not grant healing; healing is only from Allah. If you believe in Allah, I will pray to Allah, and He will grant you healing.’ So he believed in Allah, and Allah granted him healing. After being cured, he went to the king and sat before him as he used to. The king saw him and asked, ‘Who restored your sight?’ He said, ‘My Lord.’ The king said, ‘Do you have any other Lord besides me?’ He said, ‘My Lord and your Lord is only one Allah.’ The king arrested him and kept punishing him until he revealed the boy’s whereabouts. So the boy was brought before the king. The king said, ‘Your magic has reached such a level that you cure the born blind and leprous and do many other things!’ The boy said, ‘I do not grant healing; the Healer is Allah.’ The king also arrested him and kept punishing him until he revealed the priest’s whereabouts. The priest was brought and told to renounce his religion. He refused. The king ordered a saw to be brought and placed it on the middle of his head (the part where hair grows) and cut his head until it was split into two parts. Then the king’s courtier was brought and told to renounce his religion. He also refused. So the saw was placed on the middle of his head and his head was cut into two pieces.

Then the boy was caught and brought. He was told to renounce his religion. He refused. The king handed him over to some of his special men and said, ‘Take him to such and such mountain, climb it with him, and when you reach the top, ask him about his religion. If he renounces his religion, it is fine; otherwise, throw him down from there!’ So they took him and climbed the mountain. The boy prayed, ‘O Allah! Be sufficient for me against them as You will!’ The mountain shook, and all of them fell down. The boy came to the king. The king asked, ‘What did your companions do? (Did they not throw you from the mountain top?)’ The boy said, ‘Allah was sufficient for me against them.’ The king again handed him over to some special men and told them to take him on a boat and go to the middle of the sea and ask him about his religion. If he renounces it, fine; otherwise, throw him into the sea!

So they took him, and he sat in the boat and prayed, ‘O Allah! Be sufficient for me against them as You will!’ The boat capsized, and all drowned. The boy again came to the king. The king asked, ‘What did your companions do? (Did they not throw you into the sea?)’ The boy said, ‘Allah was sufficient for me against them.’ Then the boy said to the king, ‘You cannot kill me until you follow the method I will tell you.’ The king said, ‘What is that?’ He said, ‘Gather people in an open field and hang me on a pole to crucify me. Then take an arrow from my quiver, place it on the bowstring, and say, “In the name of Allah, who is the Lord of this young man,” then shoot the arrow at me. When you do this, you will kill me.’ The king gathered all the people in a field and hung the boy on a pole. Then he took an arrow from his quiver, placed it on the bowstring, said, ‘In the name of Allah, who is the Lord of this young man,’ and shot the arrow. The arrow hit his temple, and the boy placed his hand on the spot where the arrow hit and died. People began saying, ‘We believe in the Lord of the young man, we believe in the Lord of the young man, we have accepted the Lord of the young man.’ The king was informed, ‘Look, the fear or dread you had has come true. By Allah! This fear has become a reality; people have believed.’ So he ordered trenches to be dug at the entrances of the streets, and they were dug and lit with fire. He said, ‘Whoever does not renounce his religion, burn them in these or tell them to jump in.’ The king’s agents did so until a woman came with her child. She hesitated to fall into it, and the child said to her, ‘O my mother! Be patient and steadfast because you are on the truth.'”

Later, she was informed that it was the Prophet (peace be upon him). Upon hearing this, she came to his door, found no gatekeepers, and said, ‘I did not recognize you.’ Then he (peace be upon him) said to her (while admonishing): Patience is to be exercised at the onset of the calamity (later, patience naturally comes). In another narration in Muslim, it is mentioned that the grave was of her child, over whom she was weeping.”
