The Reality of the Ḥadīth on Loving the Arabs

Source: Fatāwā Amun Pūrī by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amun Pūrī

The Question

What is the authenticity of the ḥadīth:
“Love the Arabs for three reasons: because I am an Arab, the Qur’an is in Arabic, and the language of Paradise is Arabic.”

The Answer

This narration is found in al-Mustadrak of al-Ḥākim (7000) and other works.
It is fabricated (mawḍūʿ).

  • Yaḥyā ibn Buraydah al-Shuʿarī is abandoned (matrūk).
  • He is followed by Muḥammad ibn Faḍl al-Khurāsānī, who himself is unreliable.

Criticism from the Scholars

❀ Imām Abū Ḥātim رحمه الله said:
هٰذا حديث كذب
“This is a fabricated ḥadīth.”
(ʿIlal al-Ḥadīth, Ibn Abī Ḥātim: 2641)

❀ Ḥāfiẓ ʿUqaylī رحمه الله said:
منكر لا أصل له
“It is munkar and has no basis.”
(al-Ḍuʿafāʾ al-Kabīr: 3/348)

❀ Ḥāfiẓ al-Dhahabī رحمه الله explicitly graded it:
“Mawḍūʿ (fabricated).”
(Mīzān al-Iʿtidāl: 3/103)

Conclusion

The narration “Love the Arabs for three reasons…” is baseless and fabricated. It cannot be attributed to the Prophet ﷺ in any way.
