❖ Introduction

Visiting the graves (Ziyārat al-Qubūr) is a Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ that serves two primary purposes:
➊ Supplicating for the forgiveness of the deceased
➋ Renewing one’s reminder of death and the Hereafter

Islam not only permits but encourages visiting graves—provided it is done within the boundaries set by the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah. This article elaborates on the etiquettes of grave visitation, the permissibility for women, prescribed supplications, and highlights prevalent innovations (bid‘āt) that must be avoided.

◈ General Etiquettes of Visiting Graves

✿ There is no specific time restriction in Islam for visiting the graveyard. One may go during the day or night.

✿ However, visiting during a peaceful time, such as at night, is preferred if safe, as it was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ to visit Jannat al-Baqī‘ at night.
— [Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 974]

✿ While visiting, it is Sunnah to stand, face the graves, and raise hands in du‘ā’, praying for the deceased with a humble and sincere heart.

◈ Women Visiting the Graves

Islam allows women to visit graves with proper conditions:

① They are included in the Prophet’s general command:
“Visit the graves.”
— [Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 977]

② ʿĀ’ishah (رضي الله عنها) reported that the Prophet ﷺ later permitted women to visit graves after initially prohibiting it.
— [Sunan Ibn Mājah 1570; al-Mustadrak 1392]

③ The Prophet ﷺ saw a woman crying at a grave and advised her:
“Fear Allah and be patient.”
— [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1283]

✔ However, frequent visitation, going without a maḥram, or appearing in adornment or without proper hijab is discouraged.

✔ Hadiths cursing “women who visit graves” are interpreted to apply to those who engage in lamentation or un-Islamic behaviors.

◈ Objectives of Grave Visitation

According to the Hadith of Buraidah (رضي الله عنه), the Prophet ﷺ said:

“I had forbidden you from visiting graves. Now, visit them, for they remind you of the Hereafter.”
— [Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 977]

Thus, there are two main objectives for visiting graves:

➊ To seek forgiveness and make duʿā’ for the deceased
➋ To reflect upon death and prepare for the Hereafter

◈ Prescribed Supplications for Visiting Graves

The Prophet ﷺ taught his companions the following du‘ā’ when visiting graves:

السلام عليكم أهل الديار من المؤمنين والمسلمين، وإنا إن شاء الله للاحقون، أسأل الله لنا ولكم العافية
— [Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 975]

And he ﷺ taught ʿĀ’ishah (رضي الله عنها) to say:

السلام عليكم أهل الديار من المؤمنين والمسلمين، يرحم الله المستقدمين منا والمستأخرين، وإنا إن شاء الله بكم لاحقون
— [Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 974]

✔ These authentic supplications should be recited sincerely at the graveyard.

❖ Innovations Commonly Practiced at Cemeteries

Islam strictly prohibits introducing new practices into religious rituals. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Every innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance leads to the Fire.”

Below are some common bid‘āt related to graves:

① ❌ Placing rose petals or garlands on graves — Not from Sunnah
② ❌ Lighting candles or incense sticks at graves — No basis in Islam
③ ❌ Whitewashing, decorating, or applying clay to graves, especially in Muḥarram
④ ❌ Reciting Fātiḥah or distributing food offerings near graves — Not sanctioned
⑤ ❌ Sitting near graves to recite Qur’an — Without basis in authentic texts
⑥ ❌ Circumambulating graves, distributing sweets, especially in Muḥarram
⑦ ❌ Performing acts like prostration, rukūʿ, or placing amulets at graves
⑧ ❌ Becoming a caretaker of a grave, holding festivals (ʿUrs), dancing (dhammāl) — All are clear acts of innovation and misguidance

❖ Final Remarks and Conclusion

Only two purposes should motivate a believer to visit a grave:

➊ Supplication for the deceased
➋ Reflection on death and preparation for the Hereafter

The rest—floral rituals, communal food distributions, and ceremonies—have no foundation in the Prophet’s teachings and should be avoided to safeguard one’s ʿaqīdah and practices.

Let us commit to visiting the graves in accordance with the authentic Sunnah, avoiding all innovations, and praying sincerely for our deceased loved ones.

May Allah ﷻ grant us wisdom, sincerity, and the ability to adhere to His Prophet’s ﷺ path in all matters. Āmīn.
