Ruling on Entering the Mosque During the Second Adhan on Friday

Question
If a person enters the mosque on Friday while the mu’adhdhin is giving the second adhan, should he perform Tahiyyat al-Masjid or respond to the adhan?
Answer
Alhamdulillah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. To proceed:
The scholars have clarified that:
- If a person enters the mosque on Friday during the second adhan,
- He should perform Tahiyyat al-Masjid.
- He should not occupy himself with verbally responding to the adhan.
- This is because listening to the Friday khutbah is wajib,
- Whereas responding to the adhan is sunnah.
- A sunnah act cannot take precedence over a wajib act.
Therefore, when the second adhan is being given, performing Tahiyyat al-Masjid is preferable so that one is ready and free to listen attentively to the khutbah.
