Question:

Is it an innovation to pronounce the Adhan and Iqamah for the two Eids?

Answer:

Yes, saying Adhan and Iqamah for the two Eids is an innovation, because during the Prophetic era the two Eids were performed without Adhan and Iqamah.
❀ Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates:
“I performed the two Eids with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, many times; neither Adhan was pronounced for it nor Iqamah.”

Reference: (Sahih Muslim: 887)

❀ Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with both of them, narrates: “On the day of Eid, I attended the Eid prayer with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him; he started with the prayer instead of a sermon, and there was neither Adhan nor Iqamah in it.”

Reference: (Sahih Muslim: 885)

Question:

Is the bath (Ghusl) for the two Eids Sunnah?

Answer:

Taking a bath on the two Eids is recommended.
❀ Zadhan Abu Umar, may Allah have mercy on him, states:
“A person asked Sayyidina Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, about the bath, and he said: If you wish, bathe every day. He asked: No, the bath which is the prescribed bath. He said: On Friday, on the day of Arafah, on the day of sacrifice, and on the day of Eid al-Fitr.”

Question:

What is said about the prayer on the night of the crescent?

Answer:

It is not established to specially worship on the night of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha; rather, it is an innovation. All the narrations presented regarding this are weak and not acceptable.

Question:

How is saying تَقَبَّلَ اللّٰهُ مِنَّا وَمِنْكُمْ on the occasion of the two Eids?

Answer:

Correct. It is a customary practice among Muslims.
❀ Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, was asked about this, and he said:

Question:

Where should the Eid prayers be performed?

Answer:

The Sunnah is that the Eid prayers should be performed outside the populated area, in the Eidgah. In case of necessity, the Eid prayer can also be performed in a mosque or similar place.
❀ The scholars of the Hanafi school write:
“It is Sunnah to go out towards the desert for the Eid prayer, even if the congregational mosque can accommodate all the worshippers. This is the ruling of most scholars and it is the correct one.”

Reference: (Fatawa Alamgiri: 150/1)

❀ During the caliphate of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) and others went out to the desert to perform the Eid prayer.

Reference: (Al-Awsat by Ibn al-Mundhir: 2141, and its chain is authentic)

❀ Allama Shawkani (may Allah have mercy on him) (1250 AH) states:
“It is established from the Sunnah that the Eid prayers should be performed in the desert, except when there is an excuse such as rain.”

Reference: (As-Sail al-Jarrar, p. 196)

Question:

How is it to wear new clothes on Eid?

Answer:

Wearing new or fine bright clothes on the day of Eid is recommended. It is a day of happiness. Since wearing fine clothes on Friday is Sunnah, it is even more permissible and Sunnah to wear them on Eid, because Eid is a more important occasion than Friday.
❀ Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
“There is no harm upon you to have clothes for work besides clothes for Friday and Eid.”

Reference: (At-Tamhid by Ibn Abd al-Barr: 35/24, and its chain is Hasan)

❀ It is narrated about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them):

“He (may Allah be pleased with them) used to wear the finest clothes on the two Eids.”

Question:

Is it Sunnah to recite Surah Al-A’la and Surah Al-Ghashiyah in the recitation of the Friday prayer and Eid prayer?

Answer:

It is Sunnah that Surah Al-A’la and Surah Al-Ghashiyah are recited in the Friday prayer and Eid prayer.
❀ Sayyiduna Nu’man bin Bashir رضي الله عنه narrates:
“The Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم used to recite Surah Al-A’la and Surah Al-Ghashiyah in the Eid prayer, and if Eid and Friday coincided, he would recite these same Surahs in both.”

Reference: (Sahih Muslim: 878, Al-Muntaqa li Ibn al-Jarood: 265)

Question:

How is visiting the graveyard after the Eid prayer?

Answer:

Visiting the graveyard is permissible and legitimate, but making it specific to a particular day, such as going to the graveyard on Eid day to pray and scatter flowers on the graves, is an innovation (bid’ah). The Muslims of the early generations were unaware of this. They were the ones who loved the Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم the most and fulfilled the demands of love for the Messenger. Despite having vast knowledge of the religion, they did not do this, so how did this become part of the religion?
❀ Imam Malik bin Anas رحمه الله (179 AH) says:

“Whoever today introduces something upon which the predecessors of the Ummah did not act, he is, by the language of the state, saying that the Noble Prophet ﷺ was negligent in conveying the message of Prophethood. Allah’s command is: الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِي وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الْإِسْلَامَ دِينًا ‘Today We have perfected your religion for you, completed Our favor upon you, and have chosen Islam as your religion.’ Therefore, whatever was not part of the religion on that day cannot be part of the religion today.”

Reference: (Al-Ihkam fi Usool al-Ahkam by Ibn Hazm: 6/58, and its chain is Hasan)

❀ Allama Ibn al-Hajj, may Allah have mercy on him (737 AH), says:

“This is also a satanic trick that he does not say to abandon the Sunnah, but diverts the mind to some other act by making it seem like a rewarding deed. Satan deceived people by making them visit graves before returning home on Eid day, adorning this act with various imaginations and providing them with mental arguments that visiting the graves of their relatives on this day is a good deed and an expression of love. They feel sorrow for their absence on this Eid. People have also stirred up innovations and superstitions regarding graves on ordinary days. So what will happen on Eid day, when women wear pleasant clothes and jewelry and cross the limits of adornment? They do not even go out for Eid yet; when they go out for visiting graves, watch how they tear apart their veil of modesty at the graves. Thus, Satan made them commit a forbidden act instead of following the Sunnah.”

Question:

Can tayammum be performed for the Eid prayers?

Answer:

If water is not available or it is not possible to use water, then tayammum can also be performed for the Eid prayers.

Question:

Is sujood as-sahw (prostration of forgetfulness) obligatory if there is a mistake in the Eid prayer?

Answer:

In every prayer, sujood as-sahw is required for mistakes and forgetfulness. There is no exception for any prayer.

Question:

“The Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم came out on the day of Eid al-Fitr, performed two rak’ahs (Eid prayer), neither before it any prayer was performed nor after it.”

Reference: (Sahih al-Bukhari: 989, Sahih Muslim: 884, Al-Muntaqa li Ibn al-Jarood: 261)

This hadith indicates that there is no voluntary prayer before the Eid prayer. If the Eid prayer is performed in the mosque, can Tahiyyat al-Masjid be performed upon entering the mosque, since Tahiyyat al-Masjid is prescribed and recommended upon entering the mosque?
❀ Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:

“When you enter the mosque, pray two rak’ahs before sitting down.”

Reference: (Sahih al-Bukhari: 444, Sahih Muslim: 714)

❀ In one narration it is stated:

“Do not sit until you have prayed two rak’ahs.”

Reference: (Sahih al-Bukhari: 444, Sahih Muslim: 714)

What is the answer to this contradiction and difficulty?

Answer:

If the Eid prayer is performed in the mosque, then upon entering the mosque, Tahiyyatul Masjid can be performed, because Tahiyyatul Masjid is a Sunnah prayer that is prescribed upon entering the mosque. The Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did not perform any Nafl prayers before the Eid prayer, because he ﷺ always performed the Eid prayer in the desert or at the Eidgah. Therefore, Nafl prayers before the Eid prayer are not prescribed, but if for some other reason, such as Tahiyyatul Masjid, two Nafl prayers become prescribed, then they can be performed.

Question:

How is it to shake hands or embrace after Eid?

Answer:

Handshaking or embracing at the time of meeting is Sunnah.
❀ Hafiz Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him (676 AH), says:

“According to authentic hadiths and the consensus of the scholars, handshaking at the time of meeting is Sunnah.”

Reference: (المَجموع: 633/4)

To restrict handshaking or embracing to a specific time or place without evidence makes it an innovation. Handshaking or embracing is not established after any prayer.
❀ Allama Ibn al-Hajj, may Allah have mercy on him (737 AH), says:
“Handshaking is permissible when a believer meets his brother. As for what some people have made a habit of, that they shake hands after the Eid prayers, I do not know any evidence for that.”

Reference: (المَدخل: 288/2)

❀ He also says:

“A worshiper should refrain from the handshake after Fajr and Asr prayers and after Jumu’ah, which people have introduced as a religious practice by exaggeration. Some people have increased this further and have started doing it after all five prayers. All these are innovations. In Shariah, the time for a handshake is when a Muslim meets his Muslim brother, not after the five prayers. All such acts are innovations. We will keep the matters as Shariah has prescribed. This act should be stopped, and the one who does it should be reprimanded because he has committed an act contrary to the Sunnah.”

Reference: (المَدخل: 223/2)

❀ Allama Ibn Abidin Shami, may Allah have mercy on him (1252 AH), says:
“Shaking hands after performing the prayer is definitely disliked because the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, never shook hands after performing the prayer, and this is also the practice of the Rafidah.”

Reference: (فتاویٰ شامی: 381/6)

❀ Allama Abdul Hay Lakhnawi, may Allah have mercy on him (1304 AH), says:

“In our times, in many areas, especially in the Deccan regions, which are centers of innovations and trials, two practices have become common that need to be abandoned. First, people do not say salam when entering the mosque at the time of Fajr prayer; instead, they enter, perform Sunnahs, then after performing the obligatory prayer and adhkar, they greet each other with salam. This is an objectionable matter because saying salam is Sunnah at the time of meeting, as proven by hadiths, not during the gathering. Second, they shake hands after Fajr and Asr prayers, on the two Eids, and after Jumu’ah, whereas shaking hands is Sunnah only at the beginning of the meeting.”

❀ Allama Azeem Abadi, may Allah have mercy on him (1329 AH), says:
“Shaking hands and embracing after the two Eids is a blameworthy innovation and against Shariah, and Allah knows best!”

Question:

How is it to play with weapons by young people on the day of Eid?

Answer:

It can be played with caution.
❀ Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates:
“It was the day of Eid, the Abyssinians were playing (war games) with shields and spears, either I asked or the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) himself said, ‘Do you wish to watch?’ I said: Yes! The Prophet (peace be upon him) made me stand behind him, my cheek was above his cheek, he said: Keep playing, Banu Arfada! When I got tired, he said: Enough? I said: Yes! He said: Okay, go.”

❀ The words of Sahih Muslim are:

“On the day of Eid, the Abyssinians began military exercises in the mosque.”
❀ Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates:
“The Abyssinians were performing military exercises in front of the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) and were dancing while saying: Muhammad (peace be upon him) is a good man. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) asked: What are they saying? The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) informed: They are saying that Muhammad Karim (peace be upon him) is a good man.”

Imam Ibn Hibban (may Allah have mercy on him) (5870) has declared this hadith authentic.

Question:

How is the following narration in terms of its chain of transmission?
❀ It is narrated from Ibrahim Nakha’i, may Allah have mercy on him:
“Sayyiduna Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, may Allah be pleased with them, was the first person who ended the takbeerat al-intiqal (transitional takbirs) in prayer, delivered the sermon before the Eid prayers, gave the sermon sitting on the pulpit, and shortened the iqamah and salam.”
