✿ Qur’anic and Prophetic Evidence
Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“When a human dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 1631)
✿ Scholarly Statements
✔ Imam al-Nawawī رحمه الله (676H) said:
“This hadith proves that the reward of duʿāʾ reaches the deceased, as does charity. Both are agreed upon by consensus.”
(Sharḥ al-Nawawī: 11/85)
He also said:
“Charity reaches the deceased, and he benefits from it. There is no difference of opinion among Muslims on this matter, and this is the correct view.”
(Sharḥ al-Nawawī: 1/89)
✔ Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله (728H) said:
“There is no dispute among the scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamāʿah regarding the reward of financial acts of worship (such as charity and freeing slaves) reaching the deceased. Likewise, duʿāʾ, seeking forgiveness, funeral prayer, and supplication at his grave also reach him.”
(Al-Fatāwā al-Kubrā: 3/63)
✔ Imam Ibn Abī al-ʿIzz al-Ḥanafī رحمه الله (792H) said:
“Ahl al-Sunnah are agreed that the dead benefit from the actions of the living in two ways: first, that which the deceased himself caused during his lifetime; second, the duʿāʾ, istighfār, and charity offered by Muslims on his behalf.”
(Sharḥ al-ʿAqīdah al-Ṭaḥāwiyyah, p. 452)
✔ Imam Abū al-Baqāʾ al-Damīrī رحمه الله (808H) said:
“Charity on behalf of the deceased benefits him — by consensus of the jurists. The denial of some theologians holds no weight.”
(Al-Najm al-Wahhāj: 6/310)
