Source: Aḥkām wa Masāʾil – Janāzah Issues, Vol. 1, p. 254
❖ Question
Is there any difference between the shrouding (kafan) of a man and a woman? If yes, please explain with evidences.
❖ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:
◈ View of Shaykh al-Albānī (رحمه الله)
Shaykh al-Albānī, in his well-known book Aḥkām al-Janāʾiz, clearly states that there is no difference between the shrouding of a man and a woman.
He writes:
«وَالْمَرأَة ُ فِیْ ذٰلِکَ کَالرَّجُلِ إِذْ لاَ دَلِيْلَ عَلَی التَّفْرِيْقِ»
(Aḥkām al-Janāʾiz, p. 65)
Translation:
“In this matter, the woman is like the man, since there is no evidence establishing any difference.”
◈ The Weak Report of Laylā bint Qānaf
Shaykh al-Albānī also points out a weak narration:
Laylā bint Qānaf al-Thaqafiyyah narrated that the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ was shrouded in five garments. However, this narration is not authentic because:
- It contains Nūḥ ibn Ḥakīm al-Thaqafī, who is a majhūl (unknown) narrator as stated by Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar and others.
- There is also another defect in the narration, highlighted by Imām al-Zaylaʿī in Naṣb al-Rāyah (2/258).
◈ View of Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar (رحمه الله)
While Shaykh al-Albānī weakened the above report, Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar, in Fatḥ al-Bārī, referred to another angle of evidence.
He cites:
“The statement of al-Ḥasan regarding the fifth garment indicates that the beginning of the narration is that a woman is to be shrouded in five garments.”
◈ Supporting Narrations
- Ibn Abī Shaybah narrated a similar report through a connected chain.
- al-Jawzqī narrated via Ibrāhīm ibn Ḥabīb ibn al-Shahīd, from Hishām, from Ḥafṣah, from Umm ʿAṭiyyah (رضي الله عنها):
She said:
“We shrouded the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ in five garments, and we covered her head as a living woman is covered.”
Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar concluded:
“This addition has a ṣaḥīḥ chain of narration.”
❖ Summary of the Matter
✔ According to Shaykh al-Albānī (رحمه الله) → There is no difference between the shrouding of a man and a woman, as no sound evidence establishes it.
✔ According to Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar (رحمه الله) and some other scholars → There are authentic reports supporting that a woman may be shrouded in five garments.
✔ Therefore:
- The majority view (jumhūr): No distinction between man and woman in kafan.
- Another scholarly view: A woman may be shrouded in five garments, based on the narration of Umm ʿAṭiyyah (رضي الله عنها).
