Reference: Ahkam wa Masail, Zakāt Issues, Vol. 1, Page 275

❖ Question:

How many days before the sighting of the ʿĪd al-Fiṭr moon should fiṭrah (ṣadaqat al-fiṭr) be paid?

❖ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

◈ The Best Time to Pay Fiṭrah

◈ The best time to pay ṣadaqat al-fiṭr is during the last ten days of Ramadan.
◈ If someone pays it after the ʿĪd prayer, then it will not count as ṣadaqat al-fiṭr, but will merely be considered an ordinary charity.

◈ Ḥadīth Evidence

It is narrated from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās (RA):

(Ṣaḥīḥ Abū Dāwūd, Kitāb az-Zakāh, Bāb Zakāt al-Fiṭr)

Meaning:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made ṣadaqat al-fiṭr obligatory as a means of purifying the fasting person from idle and indecent speech, and as provision for the poor.
Whoever pays it before the ʿĪd prayer, it is an accepted zakāt.
Whoever pays it after the ʿĪd prayer, it is considered one of the voluntary charities.

◈ Conclusion

✔ Ṣadaqat al-fiṭr must be given before the ʿĪd al-Fiṭr prayer.
✔ It is better to give it during the last ten days of Ramadan, so that the needy can benefit from it before ʿĪd.

Hādhā mā ʿindī, wallāhu aʿlam biṣ-ṣawāb.
