❖ Completing Jumu‘ah Prayer When Less Than One Rak‘ah Is Caught
✍ Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori
❖ If Less Than One Rak‘ah Is Attained
For instance, if a person joins the prayer during the sajdah (prostration) or tashahhud (final sitting) of the second rak‘ah, even then, he should complete his Jumu‘ah prayer, not the Zuhr prayer, because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
فما أدركتم فصلوا وما فاتكم فأتموا
“Whatever portion of the prayer you catch with the Imam, perform it, and complete whatever you missed.”
[Tuhfat al-Ahwazi: 3/83]
❖ Opinions of the Scholars
✔ Imam Abu Hanifah (رحمه الله) held this view.

✔ Imam Ibn Hazm (رحمه الله) also gave preference to this view.
[Al-Muhalla bil-Athar: 3/283]
❖ Contrasting Opinion
✖ Imam Malik (رحمه الله) and Imam Shafi‘i (رحمه الله) opined that if one complete rak‘ah is not attained, then the person must pray four rak‘ahs of Zuhr, and not two rak‘ahs of Jumu‘ah.
