Question
Are women allowed to participate in the funeral prayer (ṣalāt al-janāzah)?
Answer
Yes, women may participate in the funeral prayer if proper ḥijāb and segregation arrangements are in place, provided they:
- Do not display impatience,
- Do not engage in wailing (nawḥ), crying loudly, or making lamentations.
Evidence
❀ When the son of Abū Ṭalḥah (رضي الله عنه), ʿUmayr (رضي الله عنه), passed away, Umm Sulaym (رضي الله عنها) attended his funeral prayer along with the Prophet ﷺ and Abū Ṭalḥah (رضي الله عنه).
(Sharḥ Maʿānī al-Āthār by al-Ṭaḥāwī 1/508; al-Mustadrak by al-Ḥākim 1/365 – authentic chain)
Conclusion
- Women may attend the funeral prayer, provided the Sharʿī conditions of modesty and proper conduct are observed.
- It is permissible, but any un-Islamic practices such as wailing or mixing with men are prohibited.
