❖ Question:
Can a Muslim man marry a Christian woman?
✿ Answer:
Yes, a Muslim man is allowed to marry a chaste woman from among the People of the Book — i.e., Jews and Christians — provided certain conditions are met.
Allah ﷻ says:
📚 Sūrat al-Mā’idah (5): 5
“And [lawful for you are] the chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you — when you give them their bridal due (mahr), desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual relations or taking them as lovers.”
✦ Explanation:
This verse permits marriage with chaste Jewish or Christian women, but with the following conditions:
① The woman must be muḥṣanah (modest and chaste).
② The purpose must be a lawful and honorable marriage, not fornication or secret relationships.
③ The mahr must be paid.
④ The woman must belong to the original People of the Book, not to atheistic or secular offshoots.
✦ Clarification from Ibn ʿAbbās
When the verse
(Do not marry polytheist women until they believe – al-Baqarah: 221)
was revealed, the companions refrained from marrying Women of the Book, fearing that they might fall under this category.
Then, when the verse
(And chaste women from those who were given the Book) was revealed,
they resumed marrying from among the People of the Book.
📚 Tafsīr Ibn Abī Ḥātim – quoted in Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr 3/42; al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr by Ṭabarānī 12/105 — chain is ḥasan.
“People of the Book” refers specifically to followers of the Torah and the Gospel, as affirmed in:
﴿ إِنَّمَا أُنْزِلَ الْكِتَابُ عَلَى طَائِفَتَيْنِ مِنْ قَبْلِنَا ﴾
📚 Sūrat al-Anʿām (6): 156
“The Scripture was only sent down to two groups before us…”
This identifies the Jews and Christians as the legitimate Ahl al-Kitāb.
✦ Caution for Modern Times:
In our era, most so-called “People of the Book” are no longer truly religious;
many have become atheists, secularists, or rejecters of divine revelation.
Thus, if a woman does not genuinely follow a revealed religion, she does not qualify as Ahl al-Kitāb, and marriage with her is not permissible.
✔ Summary:
① A Muslim man can marry a chaste woman from among the Jews or Christians, with proper intent and mahr.
② The woman must be from the actual followers of the Torah or Gospel, not secular or irreligious individuals.
③ In the modern context, extra care is needed to verify her beliefs before proceeding with such a marriage.
④ The permissibility does not extend to those who are atheists, agnostics, or irreligious despite cultural Christian or Jewish identity.
