❖ Sequence of ʿAṣr Prayer and Funeral Prayer: Which Comes First? ❖
Adapted from: “Ahkām wa Masāʾil fī Ḍawʾ al-Qurʾān wa al-Ḥadīth”, Volume 2
◈ Question:
If the congregation for the ʿAṣr prayer is ready and a funeral arrives at the same time, which should be performed first: the ʿAṣr prayer or the Janāzah (funeral) prayer?
❖ Answer: Proper Order and Rationale
➊ The Preferred Order: ʿAṣr First
According to jurists (fuqahāʾ), it is better to perform the ʿAṣr prayer first. The reasoning is rooted in the type of obligation each prayer carries:
- ʿAṣr prayer is Farḍ ʿAyn – an individual obligation upon every adult Muslim that must be performed within its prescribed time.
- Funeral prayer is Farḍ Kifāyah – a communal obligation which is fulfilled if some members of the community perform it, lifting the duty from the rest.
➋ Juridical Principle Applied:
📘 Based on fiqh, when Farḍ ʿAyn and Farḍ Kifāyah occur simultaneously, the Farḍ ʿAyn takes precedence.
📝 “ʿAṣr should be offered first. Offering the Janāzah prayer first is not prohibited, but ʿAṣr has greater precedence due to being an individual obligation.”
(📖 Fatāwā Thanāʾiyyah, Vol. 1, p. 741)
➌ Clarification Regarding Funeral Timing:
While haste in performing the funeral prayer is part of the Sunnah, it must not compromise the timely performance of an obligatory prayer. Since ʿAṣr has a limited time frame, it is better not to delay it.
✅ Summary:
✔ ʿAṣr prayer, being Farḍ ʿAyn, should be performed first.
✔ Janāzah prayer, a Farḍ Kifāyah, can be delayed briefly without issue.
✔ If the funeral prayer is offered first, it is still valid, but not the preferred order.
✔ Jurisprudential principles support prioritizing the obligatory over the communal.
