❖ Introduction

الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد!

In recent history, the term “Wahhabi” has been used—often pejoratively—to describe Ahl-e-Hadith scholars and followers. This label is widely misunderstood and misapplied, particularly by critics who conflate political history with religious reform.

This article investigates 8 major allegations levelled against Ahl-e-Hadith by those calling them “Wahhabi” and responds to each in the light of historical evidence, Islamic scholarship, and documented facts.

❖ Understanding the Term “Wahhabi”

◈ According to established norms, “Wahhabi” refers to a follower of Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab (1115–1206 AH), who was a reformer and caller to pure Tawḥīd.

◈ Just as the followers of:
– Imām Mālik are called Mālikī
– Imām Shāfiʿī are called Shāfiʿī
– Imām Abū Ḥanīfah are called Ḥanafī
– Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal are called Ḥanbalī

So too, one may linguistically refer to the followers of Ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb as Wahhabi. However, this should be a neutral descriptive term, not one used to vilify or accuse.

❖ Historical Background of “Wahhabism” in India

① First Phase:

– The British labeled the jihād movement of Sayyid Aḥmad Shahīd and Shah Ismāʿīl Shahīd as Wahhabi to suppress resistance.

② Second Phase:

– “Wahhabi” became synonymous with anti-British rebellion.

③ Third Phase (Present):

– “Wahhabi” refers to those who uphold Tawḥīd, reject bidʿah, and promote Qurʾān & Sunnah-based Islam, such as the Ahl-e-Ḥadīth.

❖ Who Are the Ahl-e-Hadith?

✔ Not blind followers (muqallidīn) of any single Imam.
✔ They follow the Qurʾān and Sunnah directly.
✔ Their focus:
❀ Establishing pure monotheism
❀ Eradicating religious innovations (bidʿah)
❀ Staying away from taqlīd shakhṣī (personal imitation)

Thus, calling Ahl-e-Hadith “Wahhabi” as a derogatory term is clear injustice and slander.

❖ 8 Major Allegations Against Ahl-e-Hadith (Labelled Wahhabi)

❶ They Reject Intercession (Shafāʿah)

Truth:
Ahl-e-Hadith believe in authentic intercession as proven from the Qurʾān and ḥadīth—particularly the great intercession (al-shafāʿah al-kubrā) of the Prophet ﷺ on the Day of Judgment.

❷ They Do Not Send Salutations (Ṣalawāt) Upon the Prophet ﷺ

Truth:
This is a baseless lie. Salāt and Salām upon the Prophet ﷺ is an obligation, and Ahl-e-Hadith uphold this in prayer and gatherings.

📖 Eyewitnesses like ʿAllāmah Rashīd Riḍā confirmed that even leaders among so-called “Wahhabis” frequently recited ṣalawāt.

❸ They Declare Other Muslims Kāfir

Truth:
Ahl-e-Hadith never declare Muslims kāfir without proof. Their creed is grounded in mercy and caution, not extremism.

❹ They Are Khawārij or Similar to Khawārij

Truth:
Some Ḥanafī scholars equated Ahl-e-Hadith to Khawārij out of bias.
– For example, Radd al-Muḥtār (by ʿAllāmah Shāmī) unjustly uses this label.
– However, Khawārij are a sect that rebelled, while Ahl-e-Hadith adhere to Sunnah and stay within the bounds of Sharīʿah.

❺ They Promote Sectarianism

Truth:
Ahl-e-Hadith call to unity based on the Qurʾān and authentic Sunnah, not upon the name of any scholar or political movement.

❻ They Are Enemies of the Prophet ﷺ

Truth:
Ahl-e-Hadith deeply revere the Prophet ﷺ.
– They reject exaggeration in his status, but firmly uphold his uniqueness as Sayyid al-Anbiyāʾ, and the Seal of Prophets.

❼ They Don’t Believe in the Saints (Awliyāʾ)

Truth:
Ahl-e-Hadith believe in righteous people (Awliyāʾ Allāh).
– However, they reject invoking them in duʿāʾ, or asking help from graves—as this is shirk.

❽ They Don’t Respect the Prophet’s ﷺ Grave

Truth:
Ahl-e-Hadith respect al-Masjid al-Nabawī, the grave of the Prophet ﷺ, and practice etiquette in Madīnah—but they oppose innovations like seeking help from the grave or performing tawāf around it.

❖ Eyewitness Report by ʿAllāmah Rashīd Riḍā (رحمه الله)

✔ During his ḥajj journey, he confirmed:

– Shaykh ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz Āl Saud and other scholars recited ṣalawāt regularly.
– In Madīnah, the Imām of the mosque said:

“We Wahhabi Najdis consider ṣalāt on the Prophet ﷺ as integral to prayer as rukūʿ and sujūd.”

❖ Recommended Books on Actual Beliefs

For clarity, study these foundational texts:

① Kitāb al-Tawḥīd – Shaykh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb
② Tuhfat al-Wahhābiyyah
③ ʿAllāmah Ibn Taymiyyah’s Works
④ ʿAllāmah Ibn al-Qayyim’s Iʿlām al-Muwaqqiʿīn – translated and praised even by Maulānā Abul Kalām Āzād.

❖ Conclusion

◈ “Wahhabi” is a politically distorted label used against Ahl-e-Hadith.
◈ Ahl-e-Hadith are committed to the Qurʾān and Sunnah, not to any one person—even not to Shaykh Ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb uncritically.
◈ All 8 allegations against them are baseless and slanderous, fueled by sectarian bias.
◈ Let us judge people by their real beliefs, not labels or hearsay.
