Precautions for Protection from Magic

It is also possible for a Muslim to protect himself from magic and the evil of magicians so that neither the evil eye affects him nor magic works on him. Therefore, the following matters are necessary:

Reference: In the dictionary: Magic is that which is hidden, and its cause is extremely subtle. It is named so because its actions and causes are very secret. Terminologically: It is the incantations, amulets, spells, and talismanic operations that affect a person’s heart by Allah’s command. The purpose of this is to cause harm to the person on whom magic is performed. However, Allah Almighty says: [Al-Baqarah: 102] They cannot harm anyone except by Allah’s permission. [Al-Mufid min Kitab al-Tawheed by Ibn Uthaymeen, may Allah have mercy on him, p. 313]

1. The Existence of Pure Tawheed of Allah Almighty:

Monotheism comes from a firm belief in the greatness of Allah Almighty, which is achieved by fulfilling His right of honor and dignity and by practicing His oneness and uniqueness in worship. The belief must be that no one else has any right in these matters. For this, it is necessary to observe the oneness of Allah in Lordship (Tawhid al-Rububiyyah), the oneness of Allah in Worship (Tawhid al-Uluhiyyah), and the oneness of Allah in Names and Attributes (Tawhid al-Asma wa Sifat). If these things become firmly established in a person’s heart, then there is no need for any kind of exorcism or incantation, let alone taking measures to protect oneself from evils and calamities. Allah Almighty says:

Reference: Ghaafir: 14

Call upon Allah, being sincere to Him in worship, even though the disbelievers dislike it.
Sincerity in monotheism is the best means of salvation from satanic tricks, and Satan himself has acknowledged this. Allah Almighty has narrated his words:

Reference: Al-Hijr: 39-40

He said: My Lord, because You have led me astray, I will surely make [disobedience] attractive to them on earth, and I will mislead them all, except, among them, Your chosen servants.

2. The Piety of Allah Almighty:

Whenever a person fears Allah Almighty and feels the guardianship of Allah in secret and public matters, then Allah, Glorified and Exalted, by His command and grace will remove evils, calamities, and trials from him. Allah, Glorified and Exalted, says:

Reference: At-Talaq: 2

Whoever fears Allah, He will make a way out for him.

Also, Allah, Glorified and Exalted, says:

Reference: Fussilat: 18

And We have saved the believers and the pious by a hair’s breadth.

3. Fulfilling Obligations and Avoiding the Forbidden, Repenting from Sins:

Allah, Glorified and Exalted, says:

Reference: Ash-Shura: 20

Whoever desires the harvest of the Hereafter, We increase for him in his harvest; and whoever desires the harvest of this world, We give him thereof, but there is no share for him in the Hereafter.

4. Frequent Recitation of the Quran:

Undoubtedly, the Holy Quran is the complete cure and treatment for all physical and spiritual ailments. Allah, the Exalted, says:

Reference: Al-Isra: 82

And We send down from the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy for the believers.
And the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, once instructed Hazrat Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her: Treat this illness with the Quran.

Reference: Sahihah: 1931, Sahih al-Jami: 3969

Especially the recitation of Surah Al-Baqarah. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: Recite Surah Al-Baqarah, for indeed its recitation is a blessing, and abandoning it is a cause of regret and remorse. And magicians do not have the power to break it.

Reference: Sahih Muslim: 804

Hazrat Muawiyah bin Sirmah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: Batala refers to magicians.

5. Ensuring protection through prescribed supplications and remembrances:

Among these supplications:

In the name of Allah, by whose blessing nothing in the earth or the heavens can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

Reference: Abu Dawood 5088

Reciting this prayer three times in the morning and evening becomes a means and cause of protection for a person from every evil, harm, and corruption.

❀ Reciting Ayat al-Kursi:

After the obligatory prayer, first recite other recommended supplications, then recite Ayat al-Kursi. Recite this once before sleeping and once in the morning and evening. This is the greatest verse of the Holy Quran. Allah, Glorified and Exalted, says:

Reference: Al-Baqarah: 255

Allah is the One besides whom there is no true deity, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:
Recite Ayat al-Kursi الله لا إله إلا هو الحي القيوم completely, then act upon it. Allah will appoint a guardian for you, and Satan will not come near you until morning.

Reference: Al-Tabarani Hasan, Al-Bukhari with Al-Fath: 4/613

Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi before going to bed, an angel appointed by Allah stays with him until morning, and Satan cannot come near him.

Reference: Al-Bukhari: 5010

❀ The last verses of Surah Al-Baqarah: In the first part of the night, recite these last two verses:

Reference: Al-Baqarah: 285-286

The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: The Messenger of Allah believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so did the believers. Each one believed in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers, saying: We make no distinction between any of His messengers. And they say: We hear and obey. Our Lord! We seek Your forgiveness, and to You is the final return. Allah does not burden any soul beyond its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. Our Lord! Do not impose blame upon us if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord! And lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord! And burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.

The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: Whoever recites these last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, it is sufficient protection for him against every evil until morning.

Reciting the Three Quls:

The time to recite them is after the Fajr prayer in the morning, and at the beginning of the night, that is, after the Maghrib prayer. Besides this, one should recite them once before sleeping and once after every obligatory prayer.

Reference: Al-Bukhari: 5009

Their translation has already been provided.
The hadith states: Whoever recites these Surahs three times each in the morning and evening, it suffices to protect him from every calamity and affliction.

Reference: Sahih Abu Dawood: 5082, Sahih At-Tirmidhi: 3575

Hafiz Ibn Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Indeed, no person can become self-sufficient without these Surahs. These Surahs have special efficacy in removing the evil eye, protecting from magic, and safeguarding from all calamities and afflictions.

Reference: Bada’i al-Fawa’id: 2/199

Regularity of Morning and Evening Remembrances:

Morning and evening remembrances, remembrances after obligatory prayers, supplications for sleeping and waking up, entering and leaving the house, prayers for entering and exiting the restroom, and other supplications and remembrances prevent the effect of magic, evil eye, and possession by the command of Allah Almighty. Moreover, if a person has already been affected by these things, then the most effective treatment is these remembrances.
The honorable Allama Ibn Baz, may Allah have mercy on him, says: These remembrances and supplications are among the greatest and most important means for a person to protect himself from the evil of magic and other harms, provided he adopts them with sincere heart, complete faith, firm belief in Allah Almighty, and an open heart. Also, after magic or similar harm has been inflicted, these are among the most important means to attain relief.

❀ Similarly, this recitation:

There is no deity except Allah, He is alone, He has no partner, His is the dominion and He is the owner of all praise, and He has complete power over everything.
Whoever recites this kalima one hundred times daily, it becomes a shield for him against the evil of Satan throughout the day.

Reference: Muslim: 2691

Similarly, this recitation with abundance:

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of His creation.
Whoever recites these words when settling at any place, in a house, village, forest, or during travel by sea or air, nothing can harm him until he leaves that place.

Reference: Muslim: 2708

Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Whoever settles in a place and then says these words three times:

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of His creation.
Nothing can harm him until he leaves that place.
Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Whoever says these words three times at night, no poisonous thing can harm him that night.

6. If possible, eat seven dates on an empty stomach in the morning:

The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:
Whoever eats seven Ajwa dates in the morning, no magic or poison will harm him the entire day.

Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari (5769), Sahih Muslim (2047)

The opinion of Hazrat Allama Ibn Baz, may Allah have mercy on him, is that:
This property is found in all the dates of Madinah Tayyibah. Because in another hadith the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:
Whoever eats seven dates from this valley in the morning.

Reference: Muslim 2048

Also, he believes that:
Eating seven dates from other regions besides Madinah can also be hoped to bring this benefit from Allah Almighty.

Reference: Majmoo’ Fatawa wa Maqalat Mutanawwi’ah (277/3)

7. Charity and almsgiving, good deeds, and helping people:

One of the greatest and most important means and remedies to protect oneself from magic and other evils, corruption, and mischief is to give charity and alms, to do good to the poor and needy, and to assist them. This provides protection from many evils and reduces hardships and sufferings.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:
Secret charity extinguishes the fire of Allah’s wrath.

Reference: Al-Tabarani, Al-Mu’jam Al-Saghir, p. 214; Al-Awsat 193/1; Al-Sahihah 1908; Sahih Al-Jami’ 3760

Also, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:
Doing good and righteous deeds saves one from the paths of evil, calamities, and destructive matters.

Reference: Narrated by Al-Hakim 568/3; Sahih Al-Jami’ 3795

For this reason, giving charity was also considered a form of treatment.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:
Treat your patients with charity.
