Question:

Sermons on Disputed Issues
What is the ruling on delivering sermons regarding disputed issues between the Muqallideen and the Hadith scholars—especially when the sound from the loudspeaker reaches their mosque and there is a potential risk of sudden discord or fitnah?

(Question by: Muhammad Munawwar bin Zakki – Riyadh, Saudi Arabia)

Answer:

Alhamdulillah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. To proceed:

➊ Delivering Sermons on Disputed Issues:

It is permissible, when necessary, to deliver a sermon on controversial issues—with the consultation of the mosque committee and the congregation (muqtadis).

➋ Precautionary and Preferable Approach:

Although delivering such a sermon is permissible when necessary, the preferable and more cautious approach is that the sermon should be centered around themes of:

  • Encouragement and Warning (Targhīb wa Tarhīb)
  • Adherence to the Qur’an and Sunnah
