❀ Legitimacy of Offering Condolences and the Sunnah Words of Consolation ❀

The word taʿziyah means to offer comfort or consolation to someone suffering a loss. It is derived from the root:
عَزَّى يُعَزِّي (form II – tafhīl), and is a masdar (verbal noun).

Offering condolences is legislated in Islam (mashrūʿ) and encouraged by the Prophet ﷺ in various authentic narrations.
Narrated from Qurrah al-Muzanī رضي الله عنه:
When a Companion’s child passed away, the Prophet ﷺ came to him:
"He offered him condolences and said: 'O so-and-so! Which would you prefer: to enjoy his company during your life, or that tomorrow you come to one of the gates of Paradise and find him there waiting, opening the gate for you?'"

Narrated from Anas رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Whoever offers consolation to his believing brother during a calamity, Allah will clothe him in a green garment on the Day of Judgment that will cause others to envy him."
They asked: "O Messenger of Allah, what does envy (يُحْبَر) mean?" He replied: "It means he will be admired."

Narrated from ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Whoever consoles a person in distress will have a reward equal to the reward of the afflicted one."

Although this narration is weak, the meaning is consistent with the overall encouragement to console the bereaved.
Any words that offer comfort, ease grief, and encourage patience can be used for taʿziyah.
However, the most authentic words are found in the hadith narrated by Usāmah ibn Zayd رضي الله عنهما, in which the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Indeed, to Allah belongs what He takes, and to Him belongs what He gives, and everything with Him has an appointed time. So, be patient and seek the reward from Allah."
