❀ Legitimacy of Offering Condolences and the Sunnah Words of Consolation ❀
Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori

❖ The Meaning and Ruling of Taʿziyah (تعزیت)

The word taʿziyah means to offer comfort or consolation to someone suffering a loss. It is derived from the root:
عَزَّى يُعَزِّي (form II – tafhīl), and is a masdar (verbal noun).
Reference: Al-Munjid, p. 555

Offering condolences is legislated in Islam (mashrūʿ) and encouraged by the Prophet ﷺ in various authentic narrations.

✿ ➊ Prophetic Example of Taʿziyah

Narrated from Qurrah al-Muzanī رضي الله عنه:
When a Companion’s child passed away, the Prophet ﷺ came to him:

"He offered him condolences and said: 'O so-and-so! Which would you prefer: to enjoy his company during your life, or that tomorrow you come to one of the gates of Paradise and find him there waiting, opening the gate for you?'"

✿ ➋ Reward for Offering Condolences

Narrated from Anas رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:

"Whoever offers consolation to his believing brother during a calamity, Allah will clothe him in a green garment on the Day of Judgment that will cause others to envy him."
They asked: "O Messenger of Allah, what does envy (يُحْبَر) mean?" He replied: "It means he will be admired."

✔ Shaykh al-Albānī رحمه الله graded it ḥasan due to supporting chains.

✿ ➌ Consoler Receives the Same Reward as the Bereaved

Narrated from ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:

"Whoever consoles a person in distress will have a reward equal to the reward of the afflicted one."

Al-Tirmidhī: 1073 (Kitāb al-Janāʾiz: Bāb Mā Jāʾa fī Ajr Man ʿazzā Muṣāban)
Ibn Mājah: 1602

Although this narration is weak, the meaning is consistent with the overall encouragement to console the bereaved.

❖ Words of Condolence in the Sunnah

Any words that offer comfort, ease grief, and encourage patience can be used for taʿziyah.

However, the most authentic words are found in the hadith narrated by Usāmah ibn Zayd رضي الله عنهما, in which the Prophet ﷺ said:

"Indeed, to Allah belongs what He takes, and to Him belongs what He gives, and everything with Him has an appointed time. So, be patient and seek the reward from Allah."

Imām al-Nawawī رحمه الله commented:

"These are the best words for taʿziyah."
(Al-Adhkār as cited by al-Albānī in Aḥkām al-Janāʾiz, p. 207)

❖ Conclusion

✅ Taʿziyah (offering condolences) is a legitimate and encouraged act in Islam.
✅ It brings spiritual reward, helps in relieving the grief of the bereaved, and reflects brotherhood and compassion.
✅ The best words are those used by the Prophet ﷺ, particularly the duʿā’ from the hadith of Usāmah ibn Zayd.
✅ Even though weak narrations exist, the overall message is consistent with authentic Islamic teachings on offering comfort.
