The greatest classical tafsir based on riwayah (reports).
Relies on statements of the Sahabah and Tabi'in.
Ibn Taymiyyah repeatedly praised it.
2. Tafsir Ibn Kathir (تفسير القرآن العظيم)
Authored by: Imam Ibn Kathir (d. 774H)
Most recommended tafsir for the general Muslim today.
Based heavily on authentic ahadith and reports of the Salaf.
Shaykh Ibn Baz, Ibn Uthaymeen, al-Albani and many others constantly advised it.
3. Tafsir al-Baghawi (معالم التنزيل)
Authored by: Imam al-Baghawi (d. 516H)
Known as Khulāsat Tafsīr al-Tabari because it removes weak reports.
Highly praised by Ibn Taymiyyah and later scholars.
4. Tafsir al-Sa'di (تيسير الكريم الرحمن)
Authored by: Shaykh Abdur-Rahman al-Sa'di (d. 1376H)
Clear, simple, based on correct Aqeedah.
Widely taught by Salafi scholars today.
Ibn Uthaymeen recommended it strongly.
5. Tafsir Ibn Jarir + Ibn Kathir combination
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said:
"The most authentic tafsirs are those based upon transmitted reports such as the tafsir of Ibn Jarir, and the tafsir of Ibn Kathir is the closest to it."
