Sayyiduna ‘Itban bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I submitted, “O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)! I am blind, and there are streams flowing between my house and the mosque. Is this excuse sufficient for me to pray at home?” The Prophet (ﷺ) asked, “Do you hear the call to prayer (adhan)?” I replied, “Yes.” He (ﷺ) said, “When you hear the call to prayer, I do not find any excuse for you.”

Sayyiduna Itban bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) used to lead his people in prayer and he was blind. So he requested the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) that it is sometimes dark, there is rain and flooding, and I am blind, so please pray in my house so that I may make that place my prayer area. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came and said: "Where do you prefer to pray?" So he pointed to a place and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed at that spot.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Him in Whose hand is my soul! I had firmly resolved to order that firewood be collected, then to order for the prayer to be established, then to appoint a man to lead the people in prayer, and then I would go to those men who stay away from the prayer and burn their houses down with them inside. By Him in Whose hand is my soul! If those who do not attend the congregation knew that they would find a bone with good meat or two fine shanks, they would surely come for the ‘Isha prayer."
